Are the Commandments still valid today?
Bible Answers Live – Doug Batchelor
1 John 5:2-3
Doug’s Bible Reference: 1 John 5:2-3 “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.”
David’s Bible Answer: Seventh-day Adventists are conditioned to think that this verses refer to the Ten Commandments.” They see the word commandments and get all excited! Oh boy! This must be a Ten Commandments proof text! Yay! Again I am being a bit sarcastic to make a point here. This conclusion is built entirely upon a presumption. The Adventist assumes these verses are speaking about the Ten Commandments.
But we are not left guessing, John clearly defines God’s commandments within the context. Keep in mind there were no chapter breaks when the Bible was written. Chapters and verse numbers were added centuries later. Just two verses before 1 John 5:2 we read…
And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. 1 John 4:21
In every single example we have seen with our own eyes that Doug Batchelor which represents the beliefs of millions of Seventh-day Adventists, have made absolutely no attempt to look at the context of the verses used as “proof texts.“
Today we have seen the context surrounding these verses. In the first several examples the law was actually talking about the law of Moses, and in these last two examples we have seen that Christs commandments are to love one another. None of these verses are proof texts endorsing the Ten Commandments under the New Covenant.
Sorry Doug, you are back at square one, ground zero and have not shown us a single “proof text” endorsing the Ten Commandments under the New Covenant. NOT ONE VERSE! Rapidly firing out a bunch of verses that uses phrases like “the law” and “commandments” may be persuasive and sound convincing to untrained laymen, however this doesn’t prove anything when each verse is carefully examined using proper Biblical hermeneutics.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15
