The Ten Commandments in the Old and New Covenants

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

What role do The Ten Commandments have in the New Covenant, now that the Old Covenant has been Abolished?

By: David M. Curtis

The Ten Commandments were given 430 years after Abraham

And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. Galatians 3:17

Exodus 12:40-41 Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. 41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.

In the giving of the New Covenant, both Jeremiah and Paul stated that the Old Covenant was made “when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt.” Hebrews 8:9; Jeremiah 31:31.

The 10 commandments were NOT given BEFORE Mt. Sinai

Deuteronomy 5:2-3 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. 3 The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.

Moses just confirmed two things.

1. The Ten Commandments are the covenant God made with Israel. Immediately following Deuteronomy 5:2-3 the Ten Commandments are repeated.
2. The covenant of Ten Commandments were not made with Israels forefathers; not the least of which is Abraham, rather it was given 430 years later (Galatians 3:17)

The Law was ADDED at Mt. Sinai, and had a definite END when “the seed” Christ came.

And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Galatians 3:17-19

The Covenant of Mercy given us in Christ (Galatians 3:17; Luke 1:72) replaced the covenant of Law given at Sinai.

Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar… Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free. Galatians 4:24,30-31

“We could not find rest. We could not discover a hope; for, indeed, there is none to discover while we abide under the law. Among the considerations which held us in bondage were these:

  • The spirituality of the law, touching thoughts, motives, desires.
  • The need of perfect obedience, making one sin fatal to all hope of salvation by works.
  • The requirement that each act of obedience should be perfect.
  • The necessity that perfect obedience should be continual throughout the whole of life.

We were compelled to accept free grace, or perish. Our duty is to show men how the way of human merit is closed. We must shut them up to simple faith only, and show them that the way of faith is available.” – Charles H. Spurgeon

“The Loud Cry” represents when Jesus Cried “IT IS FINISHED!”

The timing of when the Covenant was Ratified Confirms the Ten Commandments are the Old Covenant.

The Covenant was ratified with blood in Exodus 24:7,8. This was before the rest of Exodus and the books of Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy were added to the “book of the Covenant.” Sabbatarian Christians teach that the only laws that were done away with in the New Testament were those which they call “ceremonial laws.” We will look into that in more detail towards the end of this article. For now we will point out that this argument is refuted when we consider the fact that the covenant that was abolished under the New Testament was ratified with blood before Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy were written.

The only things written in the “Book of the Law,” at the time it was Ratified:

  • The captivity and deliverance of the Hebrews Exodus 1-20
  • The Ten Commandments Exodus 20:1-17
  • Laws for slavery Exodus 21:1-11
  • Manslaughter Exodus 21:12-21
  • For one hurt by chance Exodus 21:22-36
  • Theft Exodus 22:1-15
  • Fornication Exodus 22:16-24
  • Usury Exodus 22:25-31
  • Slander Exodus 23:1-9
  • Sabbatical Years Exodus 23:10-19
  • Dealing with other nations Exodus 23:20-33

The Ceremonial Laws connected with the animal sacrifices, the sanctuary and the annual feast days written in Leviticus were not given until after the Old Covenant was ratified in Exodus 24:7,8.

Which means the ceremonial laws are not the primary thing that was done away with at the Cross. We are no longer under the ceremonial laws, In fact we are no longer under any of the 613 commandments in the Book of the Law, with the exception to those laws which were amended into the new covenant such as loving our neighbor, etc.

Additional ceremonial laws surrounding animal sacrifices and circumcision were added AFTER the covenant was ratified at Mt. Sinai and were placed outside the Ark of the Covenant, however the Covenant itself, the Ten Commandments were placed inside the Ark:

  1. The Sacrificial System of burnt offerings was introduced in the time of Adam, not Mt. Sinai!
  2. Circumcision was introduced in the time of Abraham, not Mt. Sinai!

Therefore neither animal sacrifices, nor circumcision were introduced as a newer covenant made at Mt. Sinai! Both were connected to earlier covenants given to Adam and Abraham. The covenant given at Sinai was NOT made with their fathers (Deuteronomy 5:2,3).

Deuteronomy 5:2-3 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. 3 The LORD made NOT this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.

The first covenant in Paul’s allegory in the book of Galatians was specifically introduced for the first time at Mt. Sinai. (Galatians 4:24-31), 430 years AFTER Abraham (Galatians 3:17), which excludes circumcision and burnt offerings as the core of what Paul is writing about  in the book of Galatians. The Law was added until “the seed came” (Galatians 3:19).

Furthermore the plans to make the sanctuary were not given to Moses until AFTER the Covenant was ratified (Exodus 25:40), therefore the “sanctuary services” were not the Covenant, rather they were amended into it after the Covenant had already been agreed to, and confirmed (Exodus 24:7).

The Sinaic Covenant is specifically called “the Law.” Seeking to be right with God through the Law nullifies “the promises” of the new covenant. (Galatians 3:17, Romans 4:13-16) Please look up these verses in your Bible, and compare them to Hebrews 8:6. If you do, you will discover that the New Covenant is based on “Better Promises;” and that If a person seeks to be made right with God through the Sinaic Law, by default it makes the “Better Promises” of the New Covenant void. This explains why the New Covenant is, “not according to the Covenant that I made with their fathers” (Hebrews 8:9). That verse along with Galatians 3:17, and Romans 4:13-16 disqualifies the Sinaic Law from being a possible match. The law written in our hearts under the New Covenant is supreme love for God, and self sacrificing love towards others, including our enemies!

Galatians 3:11

But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

Philippians 3:9

And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

The Old Covenant was ratified before God wrote it on Tables of Stone

  1. The Covenant is Ratified in Exodus 24:7-8
  2. Moses is invited to go up into the mountain after the covenant is ratified! Exodus 24:12
  3. Written on Stone Exodus 31:18

Exodus 24:12 (And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will (future tense; fulfilled Exodus 31:18) give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.

Exodus 24:7,8 confirms Moses wrote the Ten Commandments with his own hand with ink before it was written in stone. Paul refers to BOTH the hand written and the stone versions of the Ten Commandments.

Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. 2 Corinthians 3:3,6

The Ten Commandments were written by both the hand of Moses in Exodus 20, Deuteronomy 5 and by the finger of God on tables of stone. (Exodus 24:7,8; Hebrews 9:17-20; Exodus 31:18).

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS ARE THE COVENANT GIVEN AT MT. SINAI

Exodus 31:18

And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon Mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

Exodus 34:28

Moses, after forty days in the mount, comes down And he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.

1 Kings 8:9,21

9 There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the sons of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.”
21 “And there I have set a place for the ark, in which is the covenant of the Lord, which He made with our fathers when He brought them from the land of Egypt.”

Deuteronomy 9:9

“When I went up to the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord had made with you, then I remained on the mountain forty days and nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water.

Deuteronomy 5:2-3

“The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. The Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, with all those of us alive here today.” (Ten Commandments are given in Deuteronomy 5)

Hebrews 9:1-4

The tables are part of the abolished first covenant: Heb 8:13 When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear. “Now even the first covenant had … the TABLES OF THE COVENANT.”

Deuteronomy 4:13

“So He declared to you His covenant which He commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Commandments; and He wrote them on two tablets of stone.

“The Law and Gospel are two keys. The law is the key that shutteth up all men under condemnation, and the gospel is the key which opens the door and lets them out.”—William Tyndale.

The Ark of the Covenant Confirms the Ten Commandments are the Old Covenant

Deuteronomy 10:1-5 At that time the LORD said unto me, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make thee an ark of wood. 2 And I will write on the tables the words that were in the first tables which thou brakest, and thou shalt put them in the ark. 3 And I made an ark of shittim wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine hand. 4 And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the LORD spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the LORD gave them unto me. 5 And I turned myself and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they be, as the LORD commanded me.

Hebrews 9:4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

A simple term for the Ark of the Covenant is, “a box to carry the covenant.” That was its entire purpose. Jesus asked, “which is greater the gold or the temple which sanctifies the gold?” A long these same lines, which is more important the box itself or the covenant inside it? Remove the Ten Commandments and all that is left is a fancy box covered in fine gold. The Ark of the Covenant was created to bring emphasis and added significance to the covenant which was inside it i.e. The Ten Commandments.

Moses, after forty days in the mount, comes down And he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. Exodus 34:28

And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone. Deuteronomy 4:13.

Regarding the Ark of the Covenant in Revelation 11:18. Angels do not marry (Matthew 22:30), neither do they have children, which in turn means they do not have parents. Therefore the law in Heaven cannot be the Ten Commandments in a literal sense, because there is no need to command angels to honor their fathers and mothers. The law in heaven is simply to love God and to love one another. Christ said these two commandments are the greatest of all of God’s commandments in the Bible; which means they are greater than even the Decalogue! And rightly so, since this is the “Law of Christ” that is written in our hearts by the Holy Spirit (John 15:12 Galatians 6:2), under the New Covenant, and is the law for all of God’s Kingdom, both on earth and in heaven.

We are no longer under the Old Covenant

Hebrews 8:8,9,13

8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a New Covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
9 Not according to the Covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in My Covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
13 In that he saith, a New Covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

Hebrews 8

“first covenant replaced with second” v7.
“a new covenant” v8.
“not like the Sinai Covenant” v9.
new covenant, first obsolete, v13.
“first covenant … had two tables of stone 9:1-4.

Galatians 4:24-31

24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

Galatians 3:24-26

Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

The law was meant to prepare men for Christ, by showing them that there is no other way of salvation except through him. It had two especial ends: the first was to bring the people who lived under it into a consciousness of the deadly dominion of sin, to shut them up, as it were, into a prison-house out of which only one door of escape should be visible, namely, the door of faith in Jesus; the second intention was to fence about and guard the chosen race to whom the law was given—to keep them as a peculiar people separate from all the world, so that at the proper time the gospel of Christ might spring forth, and go out from them as the joy and comfort of the whole human race.—T. G. Rooke.

.

FAITH AND LAW

Since only perfect obedience to the Law would stand up against the Judgment, Jesus fulfilled the law on our behalf, “that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us” Romans 8:4 We are made righteous by faith alone, in the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ and faith in his death on behalf of our sins. Therefore we are no longer JUDICIALLY under the law, but are under grace. We are made righteous before God by faith alone, not by the works of the law.

1. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. (Compare to Galatians 3:12) Romans 10:4-5

2. “she is loosed from the law “ Romans 7:2

3. “she is free from that law;” Romans 7:3

4. “ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ;” Romans 7:4

5. “But now we are delivered from the law” and “serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.” Romans 7:6 (SEE #7)

6 “I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.” Romans 7:2-7 Clearly the law in question by Paul is the Ten Commandments.

7 “Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.” 2 Corinthians 3:3,6

8. Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Romans 3:20

9. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. Romans 3:27-28

10. For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, Romans 4:13-16

11. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. (Compare to Galatians 3:23, 5:18) Romans 6:14

12. But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; Romans 9:31-32

13. Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. Galatians 2:16

Jesus Forgives You! Know matter how sinful you have been, Jesus Forgives you!

14. For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. Galatians 2:19

15. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Galatians 2:21

16. This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Galatians 3:2

17. He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Galatians 3:5

18. For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Galatians 3:10

19. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. Galatians 3:11

20. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Galatians 3:12

21. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: Galatians 3:13

22. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Galatians 3:17-18

23. THE LAW WAS “ADDED” UNTIL CHRIST CAME

Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Galatians 3:19

24. Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. Galatians 3:21

25. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Galatians 3:23-24

26. Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; Ephesians 2:15

CHRIST WAS CIRCUMCISED, AND KEPT THE SABBATH AND OTHER FEAST DAYS BECAUSE HE WAS BORN UNDER THE LAW PAUL MAINTAINS THAT JESUS FULFILLED THE LAW SO THAT HE COULD FREE US FROM THE LAW

27. But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. Galatians 4:4-5

DESPITE PAUL’S PLAIN TEACHING ABOUT THE LAW, THERE REMAINS THOSE WHO STILL DESIRE TO OBEY IT. To these Paul asks,

28. Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? Galatians 4:21

29. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Galatians 5:3

THOSE WHO TEACH OBEDIENCE TO THE LAW DO NOT OBEY IT THEMSELVES

30. For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. Galatians 6:13

31. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Galatians 5:18

OBEYING THE CONDITIONS OF THE OLD COVENANT NULLIFIES THE NEW

32. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. Galatians 5:4

BOOK OF JAMES – FAITH AND WORKS

In the book of James, we find the apostle describing the “Royal Law” and the “Law of Liberty” these are the SAME law. James 2:8 specifically tells us the “Royal Law” is, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”

James 2:8

If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

1 Corinthians 3 speaks of the two laws, and describes the tables of stone as a “ministration of death” with letters that kill. v. 6,7. The law written in the heart (not stone) brings “Liberty!” v.3, 17. Galatians 4:21-31 says the covenant made at Sinai is brings bondage, not liberty! Love is the “Law of Liberty”

James message was if we love our neighbor we will not merely say so, but will do something to show our love. If we love our neighbor we will not show partiality, we will give food to the hungry, clothes to the desolate, and visit the fatherless and the widow. If we love our neighbor we will not hold grudges or resentfulness, but will forgive and be tenderhearted. The Royal Law according to James was to love our neighbor.

This is exactly what the Good Samaritan did

The Ten Commandments do not teach us to be Good Samaritans or to love our enemies. The Jews despised the Samaritans, so the Good Samaritan did in fact love his enemy when he cared for the Jew who was attacked on the road by robbers. The Good Samaritan is more than a story about doing charitable deeds, it represents the two covenants!

The Good Samaritan: Represents those who do not have the law, but have the law of love in their hearts.

The Levite and the Pharisee: Represents those who lived under the law, but did not love one another.

Which of the Ten Commandments motivated the heart of the Good Samaritan? The Ten Commandments were a law of DO NOT’s! Love not only teaches us to refrain from the DO NOTS! Love gives us the Do’s that the Ten Commandments “do not!” Love teaches us to be kind, gentle, long-suffering, patient, merciful, and forgiving. The Good Samaritan demonstrates love is greater than keeping the law the Levites and Pharisees observed. They kept the law, but did not love their neighbor.

Love is truly the GREAT COMMANDMENT. Not only did it teach us not to lie, or steal, Love teaches us what the Ten Commandments did not. Love teaches us to be forgiving, merciful, long-suffering, patient, and compassionate; and to have empathy, to give food to the hungry, clothing to the desolate, and shelter to the fatherless and widow. Love teaches us to do no harm to our neighbor.

The New Covenant law to Love, is superior when compared to the Old Covenant Ten Commandment law. Not only does love teach us to refrain from adultery, it teaches us not to lust. Not only does love teach us not to murder, Love teaches us not to be angry with another without a cause, or to hate. Love not only teaches us not to covet, Love teaches us to esteem the needs of others as greater than our own Philippians 2:2-4.

The ROYAL LAW is Love thy neighbor See James 2:8.

Galatians 5:14

For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

If I love my neighbor according to James I will not respect a rich man more than a poor person. I will visit the fatherless and the widow, I will give clothes to the desolate and food to the hungry. The entire point of James Book is if I truly love others, I will take action and not merely use words.

Romans 13:8

Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

Jesus taught this same thing in one of his parables. A certain tree had not produced fruit. Christ said let it alone another year and if it still does not produce fruit cut it down. A person can say, “I am a good tree” all he wants to, but if he does not produce fruit, his words mean nothing!

The Ten Commandments were a list of DO NOT’s!

The Law of Christ not only prohibits a person from lying and stealing and murder it is much more than that! The Law of Christ teaches us how to be Good Samaritans! To love our enemies, just like the Good Samaritan did. The Ten Commandments taught nothing about mercy, longsuffering, and compassion. They never commanded forgiveness!

The Law of Christ not only prohibits lying and stealing and murder, it does what the Ten Commandments never could! The Law of Christ written in our hearts teaches us to forgive. Love has that power. Love is forgiving, and compassionate, and longsuffering. Love is what moved the good Samaritan. Which of the Ten Commandments do you think moved him. All they said was DO NOT! Love taught the Good Samaritan to DO SOMETHING, that the Ten Commandments DO NOT!

You referred to James 2:10. This is the same thing Paul said else where. IN both Romans and Galatians we are told that anything less than perfect obedience to the law results in being under its curse. Paul concludes, THEREFORE NO FLESH SHALL BE JUSTIFIED BY THE WORKS OF THE LAW!

James statement is immersed with examples of what true love does when faced with a decision. Love takes action! The Covenant at Mt Sinai produces BONDAGE (see Galatians 4:21-31) Whereas the Law of Christ produces LIBERTY! See 2 Corinthians 3:17. Just a few verses earlier in 2 Corinthians 3:7 we are told the law ” written and engraven in stone” was a “ministration of death!” It was “glorious” but its “glory has passed away.” We are no longer under the ministration of death written and engraven in stone. We are under the law of liberty.

James 2:8 SPECIFICALLY tells us the ROYAL LAW is LOVE THY NEIGHBOR!

James is admonishing us to LOVE OUR NEIGHBOR IN ALL THINGS, and contrasts that by stating that if we fail in one point we really do not love others the way we think we do. That is the point in James 2:10. It is important to see the BIG PICTURE of James in order to understand the smaller details.

God Gave

vs.

Moses Gave

God is said to have given the Law of Moses and Moses is said to have given the Law of God.

God gave the “Law of Moses” Ezra 7:6 “Ezra… a scribe skilled in the law of Moses, which the Lord God of Israel had given”

Moses gave the “Law of God” Nehemiah 10:29 “walk in God’s law, which was given through Moses”

John 7:19 “Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?”

God gave the Book of law of Moses: Nehemiah 8:1 “bring the book of the law of Moses which the Lord had given to Israel”

God gave book of law of the Lord: 2 Chron 34:14 “the priest found the book of the law of the Lord given by Moses”

Moses gave the 10 commandments: “For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’” Mk 7:9-10

When you read the 10 commandments, you “read Moses”: 2 Corinthians 3:3,15

Interchangeability of terms in Nehemiah 9:13-14 proves there is no distinction found in the Old Testament laws of God and Moses!

Moral Law

vs.

Ceremonial Law

Some attempt to create a false distinction between the “10 commandments” and the “book of the law” by claiming one contains moral law and the other ceremonial laws:

The “ceremonial law” contains the “10 commandment moral law” twice!
The truth is, it is impossible to create any distinction based upon Moral vs. Ceremonial laws. Some create the false impression that there is nothing moral in the “book of the law” and nothing ceremonial in the 10 commandments when in fact nothing could be further from the truth.

Jesus said the two greatest moral laws were not part of the 10 commandments! Mt 22:36-40 The “Ceremonial law” contained the two greatest “moral commandments”: love God and love they neighbor
The expression “Ceremonial law” is not found in scripture: the words “ceremonial, ceremony, ceremonies and all roots etc” are never found in the same verse as the word “law or laws”

The expression “Moral law” is not found in scripture: the words “Moral, Morals, morality and all roots” are never found in the same verse as the word “law or laws”

The 5 books of Moses are filled with moral laws not contained in the 10 commandments! Ex 22:21-22,31; Ex 23:2; Lev 19:2,14-18; Deut 16:18.

Interesting that according to some, the whole of the Moral law (Some believe is the 10 commandments/ Law of God) hangs upon 2 laws found in the book of the law. “Love God with all heart” & “Love your neighbor as self” (Some believe the book of law is the law of Moses and was the ceremonial law) In other words, the two most important moral laws are not found in the Ten Commandments, but in the Book of the Law, which some say is abolished!

The Law of God, God’s law, The law

vs.

The Law of Moses, Moses Law

The Law of God contained animal sacrifices: Luke 2:23 written in the Law of the Lord, “Every first-born male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”, and to offer a sacrifice according to what was said in the Law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”

“Law of the Lord” commands burnt offerings: 2 Chron 31:3: “He also appointed the king’s portion of his goods for the burnt offerings, namely, for the morning and evening burnt offerings, and the burnt offerings for the Sabbaths and for the new moons and for the fixed festivals, as it is written in the law of the Lord.”

The law told Israel to dwell in tents:
“They found written in the law how the Lord had commanded through Moses that the sons of Israel should live in booths (tents) during the feast of the seventh month. ” (Nehemiah 8:14)

1 Chron 16:40 “burnt offering…written in the law of the lord

2 Chronicles 35:26 “Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and his deeds of devotion as written in the law of the Lord

Nehemiah 8:14 And they found written in the law how the Lord had commanded through Moses that the sons of Israel should live in booths (tents) during the feast of the seventh month.

“and bring to the house of our God the firstborn of our sons and of our cattle, and the firstborn of our herds and our flocks as it is written in the law, for the priests who are ministering in the house of our God. ” (Nehemiah 10:36)

John 1:17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.

John 7:19Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?”

Matthew 12:5 “Or have you not read in the Law, that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath, and are innocent? (Cf Num 28:9-10)

The 10 commandments are NEVER called “the law of the Lord” or “law of God” in distinction from the “law of Moses” within a single passage.

The 10 commandments are called the Law of Moses:

Mk 7:9-10 For Moses said, “Honor your father and your mother”

When you read the 10 commandments, you read Moses: 2 Corinthians 3:3,15

Law of Moses is the law given at Horeb (10 commandments):
Malachi 4:4 Remember the law of Moses My servant, even the statutes and ordinances which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel.

Law of Moses included everything God commanded: 1 Kings 2:3

Commandments

vs.

Statutes, Ordinances and Decrees

When some see the expression “the commandments” or “My commandments”, they automatically think exclusively of the 10 commandments! Yet there are many passages where these common expressions refer to what some would call “the Ceremonial Law of Moses” and NOT the 10 commandments!

The phrases “commandments”, “The commandments” “my commandments”, “the Lord commanded”, “what Moses commanded” are uses so many times in the Old Testament in reference to what some call the Ceremonial law to the exclusion of the 10 commandments, it would take 10 pages to list all the verses!

Lev 27:34 These are the commandments which the Lord commanded Moses for the sons of Israel at Mount Sinai.

Num 36:13 These are the commandments and the ordinances which the Lord commanded

Deut 30:10 obey the Lord your God to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this book of the law

Jesus defined the commandants to include the Law of Moses: Mt 19:17-19. Jesus said: “keep the commandments.” The man replied “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”

When some see the expression “Statutes, Ordinances and Decrees”, they automatically exclude the 10 commandments and apply it only to what they falsely call, “the ceremonial law” Yet there are many passages where these common expressions refer to the 10 commandments exclusively: (or at least in part include)

Deut 5:1 The Ten commandments are called “My statures and all My ordinances”

Ezekiel 20:19-21 The weekly Sabbath is called “My statutes and all My ordinances”

Neh 9:13-14 the weekly Sabbath is included without distinction: “right judgments, true laws, good statutes, commandments”

Lev 19:1-37 The Ten commandments and the ceremonial law are mixed together without distinction and called “My statures and all My ordinances”

Deut 5:1-6:25: Two whole chapters that deal exclusively with the 10 commandments and the following 5 terms are used interchangeably without distinction: “statutes”, “ordinances”, “commandments”, “judgments”, “testimonies”.

Leviticus 23 The Weekly Sabbath is lumped in with all the yearly Sabbaths without distinction and they are all called “The feasts of the Lord” and “holy convocations”.

Ezekiel 20 calls the second and fourth commandment, My statutes and My ordinances:

Nehemiah 8 uses interchangeably without distinction, the following terms:
“the book of the law of Moses”, “the law”, “the book of the law”, “the law of God”, “book of the law of God”

Written on Stone

vs.

Written in a book

This would be true except for the fact that the 10 commandments were copied twice by Moses in the book of the law. (Ex 20 and Deut 5)

It is more accurate to say that both were written in the book but only the 10 commandments were written in stone.

They were written by the hand of Moses in a book BEFORE they were written by the finger of God (Exodus 24:7; 31:18).

Although the original 10 commandment law was written by the finger of God on stone, Moses recorded the 10 commandments twice with his own hand in the book.

Placed in the Ark

vs.

Placed on side of Ark

This would be true except for the fact that the 10 commandments were copied twice by Moses in the book of the law.

It is more accurate to say that both were placed beside the ark, but only the 10 commandments were in the ark.

The 10 commandments were found two places: both “inside” and “on the side of” the Ark of the Covenant.

The fact that the 10 commandments were the only law placed inside the ark, actually proves they were the core of the Old Covenant. We are no longer under the Old Covenant, since we now live under the New Covenant Law of Christ!

    Psalms 89:34

“MY COVENANT WILL I NOT BREAK, NOR alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.”

The DIRECT CONTEXT is the COVENANT to DAVID of Christ sitting on the throne forever.

    Psalm 89:33-38
Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.
My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
Once have I sworn by my holiness that I WILL NOT LIE UNTO DAVID.
HIS SEED SHALL ENDURE FOR EVER, AND HIS THRONE AS THE SUN BEFORE ME.
It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven.

Paul says the SEED in the old testament covenants is CHRIST

    Galatians 3:16
16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to THY SEED, WHICH IS CHRIST.

Jesus was born of the SEED OF DAVID

    Romans 1:3
    Concerning his Son JESUS CHRIST our lord, which was MADE OF THE SEED OF DAVID according to the flesh;

JESUS THRONE IS FOREVER AND EVER

    Hebrews 1:8
But UNTO THE SON HE SAITH, THY THRONE, O GOD, IS FOR EVER AND EVER: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

The CONTEXT of the ENTIRE CHAPTER is the COVENANT made with DAVID that Jesus would sit on the throne forever.

    Psalm 89:3,4

I HAVE MADE A COVENANT WITH MY CHOSEN, I HAVE SWORN UNTO DAVID MY SERVANT. THY SEED WILL I ESTABLISH FOR EVER, and build up THY THRONE to all generations. Selah.

    Psalm 89:28,29
MY MERCY WILL I KEEP FOR HIM for evermore, and MY COVENANT SHALL STAND FAST WITH HIM. HIS SEED ALSO WILL I MAKE TO ENDURE FOR EVER, and HIS THRONE as the days of heaven.

    Psalm 89:34
MY COVENANT will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

    Psalm 89:39
Thou hast made void THE COVENANT OF THY SERVANT: thou hast PROFANED HIS CROWN by casting it to the ground.

    GILL’S COMMENTARY

“My covenant will I not break,…. NOT THE COVENANT AT SINAI, BUT THE COVENANT OF GRACE MADE WITH CHRIST, and which stands fast with him, Psalms_89:3, which is firm, sure, and stable, and as immovable as mountains and hills, and more so, 2 Samuel_23:5 or “profane” (m) it, though his people profane his statutes, Psalms_89:31, he will not profane his covenant; though they violate his laws, he is a God keeping covenant with them, and will not break his word with them:”

There are many covenants in the Old Testament,

1.) Covenant of Redemption made before the world was made.

    2.) Adamic Covenant

    3.) Noahic Covenant

    4.) Abrahamic Covenant

    5.) Sinaic Covenant

    6.) Davidic Covenant

Psalms 89:34 is speaking of the Davidic Covenant.

Over a dozen places Ellen White misapplies this verse to the Ten Commandments. Just another example of Mrs.White wrongly interpreting scripture to support her teachings.

Quite innocently Adventist misuse this verse in the exact same way. Simply because they have misplaced loyalties with Mrs. Whites interpretations.

Since this was a longer article, it is easy to either forget something, or miss it altogether. Therefore I will highlight this point by re-posting it here.
THE LAW WRITTEN IN THE HEART UNDER THE NEW COVENANT IS NOT THE LAW GIVEN AT SINAI
    Luke 1:72
    To perform the mercy PROMISED TO OUR FATHERS, and to remember his holy covenant;
Hebrews 8:6 (Introduction to the New Covenant)
6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also HE IS THE MEDIATOR OF A BETTER COVENANT, WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED UPON BETTER PROMISES.
    Galatians 3:17
And this I say, that THE COVENANT, that was confirmed of God in Christ, THE LAW, WHICH WAS FOUR HUNDRED AND THIRTY YEARS AFTER, CANNOT DISANNUL, that it should MAKE THE PROMISE OF NONE EFFECT.
    Romans 4:13,14,16
13 FOR THE PROMISE, that he should be the heir of the world, WAS NOT TO ABRAHAM, OR TO HIS SEED, THROUGH THE LAW, but through the righteousness of faith.
14 For IF THEY WHICH ARE OF THE LAW BE HEIRS, FAITH IS MADE VOID, AND THE PROMISE MADE OF NONE EFFECT:
16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; TO THE END THE PROMISE MIGHT BE SURE TO ALL THE SEED; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

The New Covenant is not the same, as the Old Covenant given at Sinai.

    Jeremiah 31:31-32
I will make A NEW COVENANT with the house of Israel. NOT ACCORDING TO THE COVENANT THAT I MADE WITH THEIR FATHERS in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake.

The 10 commandments were NOT given to the fathers of Israel BEFORE Mt. Sinai. Deuteronomy 5:2,3. In the giving of the New Covenant, both Jeremiah and Paul plainly said that Covenant was made “when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt.”

The Law given at Sinai was NOT given to Abraham; rather it was given 430 years later. Galatians 3:17.

The law was ADDED because of transgressions UNTIL THE SEED (Christ) CAME to whom the PROMISE was made!” Galatians 3:19.

THE NEW COVENANT IS BASED ON “BETTER PROMISES”

Study the following 45 verses carefully. They are given WITHOUT COMMENT. See for yourself THE BETTER PROMISES OF THE NEW COVENANT. That they are indeed wonderful AND ARE NOT BASED ON THE LAW OF MT. SINAI! The Bible is very clear! No comment is necessary.

The promises of the New Covenant are concerning the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the out-pouring of the Holy Spirit, mercy, eternal life, and becoming heirs of the Heavenly Promised Land! The New Covenant is indeed based upon BETTER PROMISES!

    1. Luke 1:72.
    To perform THE MERCY PROMISED TO OUR FATHERS, and to remember his holy covenant;

    2. Luke 24:49.
And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

    3. Acts 1:4.
And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

    4. Acts 2:33.
Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY GHOST, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

    5. Acts 2:39.
For THE PROMISE IS UNTO YOU, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

    6. Acts 7:5.
And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

    7. Acts 13:23.
Of this man’s seed hath GOD ACCORDING TO HIS PROMISE RAISED UNTO ISRAEL A SAVIOUR, JESUS:

    8. Acts 13:32-34
32 And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that THE PROMISE which was made unto the fathers,
33 GOD HATH FULFILLED THE SAME unto us their children, IN THAT HE HATH RAISED UP JESUS AGAIN; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
34 And as concerning THAT HE RAISED HIM UP FROM THE DEAD, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.

    9. Acts 26:6.
6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers:
7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope’s sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews.

    10. Romans 1:1-6
1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto The Gospel Of God,
2 (Which He Had Promised Afore By His Prophets In The Holy Scriptures,)
    3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, BY THE RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD:
5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:

    11. Romans 4:13.
For THE PROMISE, That He Should Be The Heir Of The World, WAS NOT to Abraham, or to his seed, THROUGH THE LAW, but through the righteousness of faith.
For IF THEY WHICH ARE OF THE LAW BE HEIRS, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end THE PROMISE might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

    12. Romans 4:20.
    He staggered not at THE PROMISE OF GOD through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

    13. Romans 4:21.
And being fully persuaded that, WHAT HE HAD PROMISED, he was able also to perform.

    14. Romans 15:8.
Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, TO CONFIRM THE PROMISES made unto the fathers:

    15. 2 Corinthians 1:20.
For ALL THE PROMISES OF GOD IN HIM ARE YEA, AND IN HIM AMEN, unto the glory of God by us.

    16. 2 Corinthians 7:1.
HAVING THEREFORE THESE PROMISES, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

    17. Galatians 3:14.
That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; THAT WE MIGHT RECEIVE THE PROMISE OF THE SPIRIT THROUGH FAITH.

    18. Galatians 3:16.
Now to Abraham and his seed WERE THE PROMISES MADE. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

    19. Galatians 3:17.
And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, THE LAW, WHICH WAS FOUR HUNDRED AND THIRTY YEARS AFTER, cannot disannul, that it should make THE PROMISE of none effect.

    20. Galatians 3:18.
For IF THE INHERITANCE BE OF THE LAW, IT IS NO MORE OF PROMISE: but God gave it to Abraham BY PROMISE.

    21. Galatians 3:19.
Wherefore then serveth THE LAW? It WAS ADDED because of transgressions, TILL THE SEED SHOULD COME to whom THE PROMISE was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

    22. Galatians 3:21,22.
Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for IF THERE HAD BEEN A LAW GIVEN which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been BY THE LAW.
    23. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, THAT THE PROMISE BY FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST MIGHT BE GIVEN TO THEM THAT BELIEVE.

    24. Galatians 3:29.
And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs ACCORDING TO THE PROMISE.

    25. Galatians 4:21-31.
21 Tell me, YE THAT DESIRE TO BE UNDER THE LAW, do ye not hear the law?
22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman WAS BY PROMISE.
28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

    26. Ephesians 1:13.
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, Ye Were Sealed With That Holy Spirit Of Promise,

    27. Ephesians 2:12.
That at that time Ye Were Without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, AND STRANGERS FROM THE COVENANTS OF PROMISE, having no hope, and without God in the world:

    28. Ephesians 3:6.
That The Gentiles Should Be Fellow-Heirs, and of the same body, And Partakers of His Promise In Christ By The Gospel:

    29. 1 Timothy 4:8.
For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, HAVING PROMISE of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

    30. 2 Timothy 1:1.
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, According To THE PROMISE Of Life Which Is In Christ Jesus,

    31. Titus 1:2.
    IN HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE, which God, that cannot lie, PROMISED BEFORE THE WORLD BEGAN;

    32. Hebrews 4:1.
Let us therefore fear, LEST, A PROMISE BEING LEFT US Of Entering Into HIS Rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

    33. Hebrews 6:12.
That ye be not slothful, but followers Of Them Who Through Faith And Patience INHERIT THE PROMISES.

    34. Hebrews 7:6.
But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, And Blessed Him That Had The Promises.

    35. Hebrews 8:6.
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also He Is The Mediator Of A Better Covenant, which was ESTABLISHED UPON BETTER PROMISES.

    36. Hebrews 9:15.
And for this cause He Is The Mediator Of The New Testament, that by means of death, FOR THE REDEMPTION OF THE TRANSGRESSIONS THAT WERE UNDER THE FIRST TESTAMENT, they which are called might RECEIVE THE PROMISE OF ETERNAL INHERITANCE.

    37. Hebrews 10:23.
Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for HE IS FAITHFUL THAT PROMISED;)

    38. Hebrews 10:36.
For ye have need of patience, that, After Ye Have Done the Will of God, YE MIGHT RECEIVE THE PROMISE.

    39. Hebrews 11:13.
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

    40. Hebrews 11:39.
And These All, Having Obtained A Good Report Through Faith, RECEIVED NOT THE PROMISE:

    41. James 1:12.
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall Receive the Crown of Life, Which THE LORD HATH PROMISED To Them That Love Him.

    42. James 2:5.
Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and Heirs of the Kingdom WHICH HE HATH PROMISED to them that love him?

    43. 2 Peter 3:9.
The Lord Is Not Slack CONCERNING HIS PROMISE, as some men count slackness; But Is Longsuffering to Us-Ward, Not Willing That Any Should Perish, But That All Should Come To Repentance.

    44. 2 Peter 3:13.
Nevertheless We, According To HIS PROMISE, Look For New Heavens And A New Earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

    45. 1 John 2:25.
AND THIS IS THE PROMISE THAT HE HATH PROMISED US, EVEN ETERNAL LIFE.
